Freenet 0.5 quesiton

November 11th, 2007 22:31 pm | by Ed |

I've been wondering about something recently. I've been running Freenet 0.5 for a few years now and while I know that the main development has been moved to the new 0.7 version and they've changed the freenet site so that most new users will get 0.7 by default.

I'm wondering, roughly speaking, how many 0.5 freenet nodes there are that are currently active at least part time (though it'd really be great to have a breakdown of how many total nodes and how many are running 24/7, I know that's not going to happen)

I know my node's report http://127.0.0.1:8888/servlet/nodestatus/version_data.txt shows that there's quite a few nodes that it knows about:

# Histogram of node versions in fred's Routing table
# Nov 11, 2007 10:15:16 PM
# nodes: 1640
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5099 3
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5100 12
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5101 4
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5102 16
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5103 3
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5104 3
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5105 38
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5106 229
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5107 1317
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5108 2
Fred,0.6,1.51,60275 3
Fred,0.6,1.51,60276 7
Fred,0.6,1.51,60277 3

I suppose that since freenet users don't generally stand up and say "I'm running thus and such node", probably the best test will be for me to delete the routing tables and node references, restart the node and then see how many it learns about.

If anybody else has any ideas or thoughts I'd be glad to hear 'em.

and no, I'm not moving full time to 0.7 yet. I have an 0.7 node to look in on it once in a while, but I"m not feeling really comfortable with it until it's got premix routing, which I understand probably won't be implemented until 0.8
