TV-B-Gone Kit Goes Open Source

November 13th, 2008 00:57 am | by Ed |

Inventor Mitch Altman has done the world a favor, two actually. Not only has he invented a device that can turn off almost any tv in public places ... An extremely cool and useful device for restoring a bit of peace and quiet in public areas that really don't need to be blasted with television. He has also decided to make his invention Open Source.

Now the device, which has become a big hit all over the place, will become even more popular. This is, in a way, the beginning of a kind of revolution. Televisions placed in public areas with the intent of blasting passers by with advertising and whatever else the person responsible for it decides that they just have to share with the rest of us whether we want to hear / see it or not.

Frankly, if I want car insurance, I really don't want to see television ads for it all over the place, I'll either search online for it or I'll call an actual human being at an insurance agency.

Call me old fashioned, but I think that most public places are not appropriate for planting a tv set and just blasting away with whatever canned video message you care to pound people's brains with. Such devices deserve nothing less than destruction but since that's going too far in the wrong direction then TV-B-Gone looks like a perfect alternative solution.
