Just in case anyone thinks that Google is interested in people’s privacy think again. They’re not. Google recently agreed to give up the IP address of an anonymous blogger who used Google’s Blogger to publish a blog in which some politicians were slandered.

I’m not defending slander or baseless accusations yet at the same time I think the big point here is that Google put up very little objection to turning over the blogger’s IP address.

The lesson here is that you shouldn’t even consider trusting Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, MSN or any other entity to maintain your anonymity. Anonymity is something that you need to work out for yourself and that means taking more steps than just signing up for a Blogger account with made up information.

To publish anonymously, check out TOR, Anonymous Remailers and of course, Freenet.
