Eight Bit Nostalgia

November 8th, 2013 22:56 pm | by Ed |

While I thoroughly despise yoga guy's "music" being played at four am while he does his exercise bit I do have to give credit for creativity.

Today I saw a UPS truck pull up to his house. Inevitably this means that there's going to be something added to the firestorm of noise that he claims is "music" and this time was no different. However there was a twist.

You see I remember Midi. It was a real thing back in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Electronic music had several runs as a new popular thing. Suddenly anyone with a midi keyboard had an inside track to popularity.

The thing is however that the midi music produced was really pretty bad. The keyboards had only eight bit processors (if that, I believe some only had four bit CPU's) and that's only enough bits to roughly approximate music. Oh they could usually be made to make sound that approximated some tune enough for people to recognize it but it didn't even really come close to the real thing.

The shipment that yoga guy got today was a new state of the art nord keyboard. This is a modern midi device that leaves it's 1980's predecessors in the dust.

Still, as advanced as it is I shudder to think of the horrors he's going to commit with it.
