%$!@^@$ That Hurt!

July 14th, 2009 07:18 am | by Ed |

I just saw something on slashdot that gave me something of a laugh. It seems that scientists have once again proving things that most of us have known almost like forever.

This time, instead of declaring that things like ephedra actually can have a positive effect in a weight loss program when used properly, this latest bunch of geniuses have decided, after actual laboratory testing that the use of cursing and general foul language actually reduces one's level of pain.

I don't know about you but I've known this for as long as I can remember, as will anybody that's ever hit their thumb with a hammer or slammed their fingers in a car door. Basically the long and short of it is that when you're using that foul language you are expressing anger at what happened. In becoming angry enough to curse and swear whatever your favorite expletive is, your brain is releasing assorted endorphins that will, among other things, act as pain relievers.

That's not to say that doctors and hospitals are going to suddenly start encouraging the use of foul language as part of treatment plans but it is food for thought anyway.

It's also something that guys everywhere can point out to their ladies when they complain about all the swearing that happens when they get hurt.

I don't know how far this one's gonna fly but it ought to be interesting at least!

The control of the tongue has slipped many times when banging a toe, hammering a finger, splattering grease. I cannot say that I have had any great control, and have – at times – said things that I have had to apologize about.

Never thought that pain relief could turn out to be a reason.
