Cool Exoplanet

March 18th, 2010 15:56 pm | by Ed |

I just saw a piece on Wired about the discovery of a planet that's actually cool enough to have a composition and history similar to the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn in our own solar system. Not only that, it's orbit is such that it passes between it's star and us, which allows a lot of observations to be made.

The planet itself is a gas giant (not exactly "Class M" ) which would make it unlikely to have any kind of life as we know it but they're also saying that if it's got moons then some of them could possibly be capable of supporting life.

The downside is that it's 1,500 lightyears away, which means that exploration is going to have to wait until somebody is kind enough to invent a practical warp drive.
