Fasten your seat belts, Micro$oft is changing something again

January 14th, 2008 20:12 pm | by Ed |

Just when you're getting used to something somebody has to come along and change it. such is the case with Micro$oft and the tool used to search for stuff on your local hard drives.

Frankly, I don't really like the changes I've seen so far. Strangely enough, I LIKED the 'find' utility as it was implemented in Win98SE. It was fairly quick, easy to understand, and flexible enough to allow me to find what I'm looking for in fairly short order.

What they've done to it in XP is just plain stupid. It's actually dumbed down and made more complicated at the same time. Now Vista's search is still more different and of course, that's not good enough, now it's got to be changed again. Of course! Somebody was probably figuring out how to get the most out of it.! We can't have that!

Microsoft to Change Desktop Search

SEATTLE (AP) - Bowing to pressure from Google Inc. (GOOG) (GOOG) and antitrust regulators, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) (MSFT) will make it easier for Windows Vista users to pick a non-Microsoft program to search their hard drives.

Microsoft will let PC users and manufacturers like Dell Inc. (DELL) set a different program such as Google Desktop as the default instead of Vista's "Instant Search," according to a U.S. Justice Department report released late Tuesday. Microsoft will also add a link to that alternate program in the Windows Start menu.
