Odd Car Noises

I've got perhaps one of the most annoying problems there is. My car is making noises that I cannot identify. Now I realize that it's a very old car. In fact, at the age of seventeen years, it's nearly old enough to vote and it will most likely never pass a California car insurance inspection but I've had it for about seven of those years and it's always been reliable and I have no plans to ever go to California.
All was fine with quiet operation (though the exhaust has always had a slightly loud, deep throated sound to it) until about a week ago when, after making a turn, there was an unexplainable rattling sound coming from below the right side of the front end anytime I hit a bump or rough patch of road.
I've looked of course but I've never been a mechanic and don't honestly know what to look for. As for taking it to somebody who is a mechanic ... well, that's for people who have the money to pay them now isn't it? There's a number of reasons I drive a 17 year old car, that's one of them.

Could be a ball joint or a CV joint. Could also be the heat shield on the brake coming loose and rattling around. There are a lot of things that could make these noises but with out looking at it (or even know what kind of car it is) it is hard to tell.
That’s the sticking point isn’t it? In order to really find out I have to spend money I don’t have to have a mechanic check it out and then recommend repairs I can’t afford. Gee, how fucking wonderfull
