When Push Comes To Shove

September 16th, 2010 10:32 am | by Ed |

"Mr. Pushy" as I call him (no real names here) is, without any possibility of a doubt, the single most persistent salesman I've ever had the misfortune to encounter.

Or so I thought.

I was at the Nujob Hills cafe & towing service the other day when he came in and took a table next to mine. I was thankful that he was on the phone because otherwise he'd probably have started up another one of those "conversations" that is really a sales pitch in disguise.

Based on what I honestly couldn't help overhearing, he was talking to one of his superiors at his home office in Chicago. Pushy was, for the first time since I've known him, entirely 100% on the defensive. He was getting the treatment that he gives everybody else. Apparently he had originally called the guy to give a weekly report of some kind but in actuality 99% of the conversation was his boss hitting him with sales pitch after sales pitch after still more sales pitches.

His boss apparently tried to sell him everything under the sun from bicycle tires, electric coffee cups, an herbal eczema treatment shampoo for his supposedly itchy scalp, to monster truck tires, part of a used solid rocket booster from a space shuttle mission and a thousand pounds of certified European dirt.

This actual barrage of sales pitches continued for the entire hour and a half that I was there. (I normally don't stay that long but I just couldn't tear myself away from this spectacle.) The shoe collector down the street told me later that Pushy was still there well into the afternoon, ducking offer after offer.

Makes me glad I live in a rural area where such things are rare.
