Another Freenet Routing Experiment (AFRE) 2

Well, It’s a little over 12 and a half hours since essentially starting over with a new freenet node well, almost. I did keep using the “painkiller” mod version with the custom settings I had in place before. No sense messing with what works. Besides, these are settings that I would recommend to anyone starting out with freenet.

Here’s a snapshot of the node’s state;

Data Store:
Maximum size 25 GiB
Used space 258,692 KiB
Free space 25,955,708 KiB
Percent used 0
Total keys 15186

Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5107 72
Fred,0.6,1.51,60277 1

Connections open (Inbound/Outbound/Limit) 47 (26/21/2000)
Transfers active (Transmitting/Receiving) 52 (43/9)
Data waiting to be transferred 3,996 Bytes
Total amount of data transferred 683 MiB

Not bad for a node that’s only been up just over half a day.

Routing Table Experiment Update 3

Well, the routing table is now up to 377 known freenet 0.5 nodes and still climbing. My open connections are also right where I expect them to be:

Connections open (Inbound/Outbound/Limit) 129 (79/50/2000)

I think I’m going to follow this for a while longer to get an idea of the network’s size and then perhaps after the new build 5108 comes out I may try again with it. I just hope that in addition to the fix for weak DH keys they also incorporate the “painkiller” mods as well.

Routing Table Expriment Update 2

It’s now about 34 hours since I deleted the freenet 0.5 routing tables and started fresh with one single node ref to start with. My open connections are at the level that I’m used to seeing them:

Connections open (Inbound/Outbound/Limit) 108 (68/40/2000)

The routing table now knows about 272 active nodes and the list is continuing to grow:

# Histogram of node versions in fred’s Routing table
# Nov 13, 2007 10:41:20 PM
# nodes: 272
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5099 1
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5100 3
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5102 2
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5103 1
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5105 9
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5106 38
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5107 215
Fred,0.6,1.51,60275 1
Fred,0.6,1.51,60276 1
Fred,0.6,1.51,60277 1

It did occur to me that when I deleted the routing table data I didn’t delete the “node” file that contains my node’s identity information. This means that it’s entirely possible that part of why my node is picking up new reference information so quickly is that other nodes already recognize it’s identity. This means that sometime soon I’m probably going to repeat this experiment with deleting the “node” file along with the routing table files.

Also, since at least part the idea is to see how fast a new node can integrate into the network, I wonder if I should delete my data store as well. I’m *really* hesitant to do that because it’s a 25 Gigabyte store. Perhaps I could essentially create a new node and when I’m done with this experiment re-integrate the existing data store back into the new node.

Routing Table Expriment Update

It’s just under nine hours since I stopped my freenet 0.5 node, deleted the routing tables and re-started it with only one node in the seednodes.ref and so far with the node running normally, learning about other nodes and expanding the routing table with newly discovered nodes the routing table now contains 158 nodes:

# Histogram of node versions in fred’s Routing table
# Nov 12, 2007 8:46:12 PM
# nodes: 158

Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5105 3
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5106 20
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5107 128
Fred,0.6,1.51,60275 1
Fred,0.6,1.51,60277 1

Freesites and frost messages are both loading normally all of this time

Freenet 0.5 quesiton revisited

Referring to my earlier entry about freenet 0.5 and a question I had. I’ve decided to try an experiment.

I stopped the node and deleted the routing table files and edited the seednodes.ref to only include one reference from a node that mine was connected to a few minutes earlier.

Here’s a snapshot of the nodes that were in my routing table before I deleted it:

# Histogram of node versions in fred’s Routing table
# Nov 12, 2007 11:53:35 AM
# nodes: 1645
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5099 3

Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5102 16
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5103 3
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5104 3
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5105 38
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5106 229

Fred,0.6,1.51,60275 3
Fred,0.6,1.51,60276 7
Fred,0.6,1.51,60277 3

and here’s a shot of just after re-starting:

# Histogram of node versions in fred’s Routing table
# Nov 12, 2007 11:55:00 AM
# nodes: 1
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5107 1

Finally, here’s a shot of what it looks like now:

# Histogram of node versions in fred’s Routing table
# Nov 12, 2007 2:30:34 PM
# nodes: 50
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5099 1
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5100 1
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5103 1
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5106 3
Fred,0.5,STABLE-1.51,5107 42
Fred,0.6,1.51,60275 1
Fred,0.6,1.51,60277 1

I’m interested to see how long it takes to get the number of known nodes back up over 1000. This should serve as something of an indicator of the health of the network.
